Synopsis

How does a financial market develop in an economy conditioned by occupation and resource scarcity? The insurance sector in Palestine is not just a commercial indicator, but a reflection of the economic and social resilience of its population in the face of the challenges imposed by Israel’s occupation policies and armed conflicts.

In this rigorous research, Thaer Hurani unravels the development of the insurance sector in Palestine, tracing its historical path since 1967 and analyzing the economic consequences of the 1994 Paris Protocol. The work offers a profound analysis of the structural obstacles this market faces under the constant pressure of territorial and administrative restrictions, addressing vital themes for sustainable development:

  • The historical evolution of the insurance sector and its macroeconomic impact in the face of chronic political instability.
  • The critical barriers to agricultural insurance due to land confiscation and the severely restricted access to water resources by the Israeli occupation.
  • The rise and philosophy of Islamic insurance (Takaful), an ethical alternative based on solidarity and shared risk.
  • The current capacity-building and digital transformation efforts to modernize financial services.

Tracing the Evolution of Palestinian Insurance is essential reading for understanding how the most vulnerable economies seek to build safety nets, adopt technological innovation, and protect their development in the face of adversity and power asymmetry.
