Principles and values

Book2bits publishes books for academia and informed readers in different areas of knowledge in social sciences, humanities, and arts, in multiple languages. It is intended that our catalog contains a plurality of ideas and the concern to offer possible solutions to the significant problems of humanity.

At Book2bits, we know that digital books are part of a growing trend in the publishing market, so we concentrate our management on these formats, although we have agreements with several companies to publish on demand.

Book2bits seeks to be an ally of academia, sharing what it does best to enhance publishing and scientific communication projects at fair prices. It supports the Open Access movement in its different expressions related to scientific production and evaluation, the San Francisco Declaration, the Leyden Manifesto, and the Helsinki Initiative.

Mission

To develop an integrated system for the production of digital books in multiplatform systems, diverse formats, and in different languages that allow their Open Access dissemination and their commercialization at fair prices.

Evaluation

Books2bits develops its catalog through collections in charge of a director, who, together with the executive director of the publishing house, decides whether a text is accepted for evaluation within a maximum period of 20 days.

The criteria are based on whether the texts are in line with the principles and values of the publishing house and comply with the established scopes for each collection.

The text is then submitted for consideration by two external evaluators. In case of discrepancies, a third evaluation is requested.

The external evaluation is open; the publisher encourages a frank discussion of ideas between the evaluators and the authors. The evaluators are free, if they wish or consider it necessary, to exchange views among themselves and with the author during the evaluation process until they write their opinion or afterward. The publisher requests that their opinion, duly argued in either case, be based on these alternatives:

  • Publishable as it is
  • Publishable with minor modifications.
  • Publishable with significant modifications.
  • Rejected

The evaluators have a period of 45 days to issue their opinion.

The publisher requests that the opinions focus on the veracity of the information offered by the book, on the coherence and clarity of the arguments to reach the broadest possible audience. The topic must be easily and quickly identifiable by the readers and the hypothesis and objectives proposed by the author, which must be coherently derived from a complete state of the art. The originality of the text is essential; it is also essential that the text offers new proposals or new approaches to its subject matter. Likewise, reviewers are asked to express their opinion regarding the book's commercial potential, which audiences it could reach, and whether its subject matter has a local, national or global scope to consider possible translations.

Open Access Policy in academic collections

Books2bits, as a publisher of digital academic books, publish in Open Access its HTML and pdf formats. The contents of each of the books in HTML and pdf are available at http://books2bits.com/editorial/index.php/B2B/

The full-text titles can be read, without charge for the reader, online in immediate HTML, and downloaded in PDF format with a two-year embargo.

Acceptance of the work by Books2bits implies no simultaneous submission to other publishing bodies and the non-exclusive transfer of the authors' economic rights in favor of the publisher to publish the HTML and pdf under the Creative Commons Attribution - Non-Commercial - No Derivative Works 4.0 International License.

The work may be shared, distributed, and publicly communicated, provided that:
(a) You cite the authorship and source of publication (book, publisher, and URL of the work).
b) It is not used for commercial purposes.
c) No derivative works are done.

The assignment of non-exclusive rights for the PDF format also implies the authorization by the authors so that, after an embargo of two years, the published PDF may be deposited in institutional repositories and disseminated through the databases that the publisher considers appropriate for indexing to increase the visibility of the publication and its authors.

Books2bits also promotes and supports the Open Access movement with a charge for the author and without charge for the reader, and encourages authors to deposit the published PDF format, after two years of embargo, in institutional and thematic repositories, with the certainty that culture and knowledge are suitable for all. Therefore, we suggest that the authors disseminate their works among the community. To achieve this, we suggest that you:

  • Share your book or chapter, the published PDF, after two years of embargo, or the link to the HTML of the work in our portal, by mail to the people that may be interested, especially to your colleagues and to the authors cited in the bibliography of your book or chapter.
  • Link from your website
  • Share your contribution to the different social networks you are part of.
  • Deposit the work in the thematic and institutional repositories you consider relevant.

Besides, Books2bits markets its academic collections in e-pub formats on its platform and multiple companies in the field. The paper format is sold only on demand and on platforms of other specialized companies.

Books2bits transparency model

The Books2bits budget asks the author for an initial contribution that allows us to cover operating costs. Revenues from sales of e-pub and paper formats are shared in the following proportions:

  • On the company's platform: 60% for authors, 10% for collection managers, and 30% for Books2bits.
  • On other platforms (of the percentage received by the company): 30% for authors, 10% for collection managers, and 60% for Books2bits.

In addition, Books2bit offers a free support service to its authors: provision of statistics on views downloads and usage, author training, consultations on copyright or CC licenses, ORCID addition, and other IDs to support institutional disambiguation.
